Description
Model 1816 Brassed Bolster H & P Percussion Conversion Rifle
A desirable U.S. Model 1816 musket altered to percussion and later rifled, retaining its .69 caliber bore with visible rifling. The conversion features a brassed bolster and hooked breech, typical of mid-19th century civilian or militia use.
The lock is marked with a spread-winged eagle over U.S., with faint but discernible HARPERS FERRY and H.P markings. Dated 1833, showing honest wear consistent with service. Metal surfaces exhibit a smooth, untouched brown-gray patina throughout.
The barrel retains visible inspection markings at the breech, including H&P 1861, clearly struck on the top flat. Additional inspector-style markings are present at the breech. The rifle retains a rear sight added at the time of conversion, further supporting its use as a functional hunting arm.
The stock is solid with a rich, dark surface and scattered handling marks. Notably, carved initials “J.R” are present on the buttstock, adding a touch of period personalization. Wood-to-metal fit remains tight and undisturbed. Both sling swivels are intact, and the original ramrod is present.
A strong, honest example of a Model 1816 conversion rifle, showing continued use and adaptation into the Civil War period.
