Description

Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber by Ames, Dated 1851

A desirable and untouched Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, manufactured by Ames and dated 1851, offered in its original scabbard where it has remained firmly lodged. Approximately 1½ inches of blade are visible at the throat, revealing clear period markings. The obverse is stamped “Ames Mfg. Co. / Cabotville / 1851,” while the reverse bears “U.S.” along with inspector’s initials “A.D.K.” Additional inspector marks, including “A.D.K.” and “L.W.R.,” are present on the pommel cap.

The exposed portion of the blade shows a pleasing dark plum-brown patina, consistent with long-term undisturbed storage. The brass hilt retains a rich, deep yellow tone with scattered darker age patina. The grip remains strong, with original leather covering and twisted wire wrap intact. Notably, the leather throat washer is still present—an often-missing feature.

The steel scabbard exhibits a deep, even brown patina with areas of age and minor denting near the drag, consistent with period use. Affixed between the ring mounts is an old tape label bearing faint, handwritten script, likely period or early collector-applied, and worthy of further research.

A compelling, completely untouched Ames example, preserved exactly as found and offering strong inspection marks, original finish, and intriguing research potential.
