Description
Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber by C. Hammond
A well-preserved Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber manufactured by C. Hammond. The flat-backed blade exhibits a pleasing gray patina with light, even peppering throughout, becoming more pronounced toward the tip. The maker’s stamp, “C. Hammond,” is visible on the left side near the guard.
The brass hilt retains a smooth, mellow yellow tone with scattered darker spotting, consistent with age. The outer branch of the guard shows a slight, unobtrusive bend. The grip remains strong, retaining much of its original leather covering with minor wear and areas of wood exposure. The original twisted wire wrap remains intact.
The accompanying steel scabbard displays a rich, dark plum-brown patina with a smooth, even surface and an attractive sheen. Notably free of dents, the scabbard does show a slight period bend near the drag, likely the result of field use.
A very attractive and honest example from a lesser-seen maker, offering strong eye appeal and desirable untouched character.
