Description
Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber By Ames Dated 1864
A strong example of the Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber produced by Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, and dated 1864. The blade retains a bright surface with scattered darker patina and areas of muted blue and plum toning from the tempering process.
The ricasso is clearly stamped “U.S.” over “M.M.” with the date “1864.” The reverse ricasso is marked “Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass.” All markings are crisp, legible, and well-struck—highly desirable for collectors.
The brass hilt displays a pleasing, untouched patina, with the guard and pommel showing honest wear consistent with service use. The grip retains its original leather wrap and twisted wire, remaining tight and intact with only minor wear near the guard. The saber is accompanied by its steel scabbard, which has been period painted black, likely for GAR display. The throat is stamped with the numeral “15.”
A well-marked and attractive Civil War artillery saber with strong eye appeal, clear inspector markings, and excellent collector appeal.
