Description
Model 1855 U.S. Cartridge Box by Baker, New York
Model 1855 U.S. infantry cartridge box manufactured by Baker of New York, a known Civil War–era contractor. The box retains its oval U.S. breast plate firmly mounted to the outer flap, exhibiting attractive, undisturbed period patina.
The leather shows honest wartime wear consistent with field use, with strong form and clear definition throughout. The interior remains intact and correctly configured, retaining its original tins, an increasingly difficult feature to find in surviving examples.
On the reverse, the box retains its roller buckles, correct for the Model 1855 pattern, and the leather structure remains solid. Construction details and hardware are fully consistent with mid-war Federal manufacture.
A strong, original example of a classic Union infantry accoutrement—well suited for a Civil War collection, display, or reference grouping.
