Muster Roll – U.S. Military Academy Musicians, Signed by Future Union Generals

Irvin McDowell & Richard Delafield – Dated 1845

Original Muster Roll of the Musicians attached to the Cadets of the U.S. Military Academy, dated June 30, 1845, West Point, New York. The document lists the names of musicians serving with the Corps of Cadets and includes enlistment details such as dates, places, and pay records.

This document bears the signature of Irvin McDowell (1818–1885), then a lieutenant, who later rose to major general in the Union Army. McDowell is best remembered for commanding Union forces at the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas) in 1861. Also associated with this roll is Richard Delafield (1798–1873), superintendent of West Point and later a Union general, who was instrumental in modernizing military education.

An extraordinary pre–Civil War military document connecting two prominent Union generals to the training and administration of cadets at West Point.

A rare and desirable piece of early U.S. military history with direct ties to the Civil War era leadership.
