Non-Regulation 1850 Pattern Steel Hilt Officer’s Sword by Horster
A striking and high-grade non-regulation officer’s sword of the 1859 pattern, German manufactured and bearing the quality and decorative appeal associated with Solingen production. This example stands out for both its exceptional condition and finely executed presentation.
The blade remains notably bright with minimal patina. Both flats are richly acid-etched, the left featuring “U.S.” flanked by flowing foliate scrollwork, while the right displays an American eagle motif. Near the guard, the blade is clearly marked “Horster, Solingen,” surrounded by additional decorative etching, confirming its respected German origin.
A small brass proof disc is inset into the blade and marked “PROVED,” framed by a radiating sunburst design—a feature of quality export blades. The etched panels remain crisp and well-defined, retaining strong contrast and visual depth. The steel hilt is equally distinctive, featuring a pierced guard with an American eagle over “U.S.” integrated into the design. The grip retains its original ray or sharkskin covering, tightly bound with wire wrap, and remains in excellent condition. The leather blade washer at the guard is still present and intact, a detail often lost over time.
The steel scabbard remains mostly bright, with a light peppering of darker patina spots consistent with age. All mounts appear intact, and the overall presentation is clean and well-preserved.
An exceptional example of a non-regulation Civil War officer’s sword, combining high-quality Solingen manufacture, vivid etched decoration, and superior condition. A refined and visually impressive piece suited for the advanced collector.
