Non-Regulation Steel Hilt Officer’s Sword
German Manufactured
A fine non-regulation steel hilt officer’s sword of German manufacture, exhibiting classic Solingen craftsmanship. The blade retains a soft gray patina with light peppering, while the original acid-etched designs remain clearly visible. The left panel displays “US” flanked by flowing scrollwork, while the opposing side features a spread-wing American eagle—both still discernible despite age.
The ricasso is crisply stamped “SOLINGEN,” indicating production in the renowned German blade-making center known for high-quality export swords during the Civil War period. A secondary circular proof mark is present on the blade, further supporting its European manufacture.
The steel guard features a pierced design incorporating a Federal eagle over the letters “US,” with “E Pluribus Unum” present within the motif. The grip retains its original ray skin covering with twisted wire wrap, remaining tight and well-preserved. The leather throat washer at the base of the guard is now absent.
The steel scabbard exhibits a dark, aged surface with remnants of old gold paint, likely applied for GAR display. Areas of wear reveal a deep brown patina beneath. Two period suspension rings remain, with traces of leather still attached—evidence of original sword belt use.
An attractive and honest example of a Civil War-era officer’s sword, combining Solingen manufacture with distinctly American patriotic motifs.
