Description
North Carolina Confederate “Sunburst” Coat Button
Civil War-era North Carolina Confederate “Sunburst” coat button, featuring raised “NC” letters on a horizontally lined center surrounded by radiating rays and a stippled field.
This distinctive one-piece stamped brass pattern was made for North Carolina troops and is commonly referred to by collectors as the North Carolina Sunburst or Starburst button. Reference examples are approximately 22–23 mm and are cataloged in the Albert and Tice button references.
The reverse is blank with the shank missing. This is characteristic of many surviving examples; the separately attached shanks were prone to becoming detached, often leaving evidence of the original attachment on the reverse.
This example retains good definition to the central “NC,” sunburst design and stippled background, with an attractive aged surface and traces of its original finish.
