Outstanding Batty “Peace” Powder Flask Dated 1850

A beautiful and highly desirable Batty “Peace” pattern powder flask, clearly dated 1850, and representing one of the most iconic and symbolically rich American flask designs of the mid-19th century. The brass body is crisply embossed with patriotic motifs, including the Federal eagle, shield with “U.S.,” and a central clasped-hands motif within a radiating starburst—an allegorical representation of unity and peace during a turbulent era.

This example displays exceptional clarity to the design, with strong, well-preserved detail throughout the panel and a rich, untouched patina that enhances its visual appeal. The spout retains its original charger with adjustable measure, and the top collar is neatly stamped “Batty” & 1850,”.  Suspension rings remain intact, and the flask presents with excellent, honest wear consistent with age.

Manufactured by the renowned Batty firm of New York, these “Peace” flasks are avidly collected for both their striking design and historical significance on the eve of the Civil War. Examples in this level of preservation, with strong embossing and clear date, are increasingly difficult to obtain. An outstanding, investment-grade example of a classic American powder flask.
