Description
Outstanding Civil War Patriotic Recruiting Broadside 3rd Delaware Infantry “Lockwood Legion”
Rare and visually arresting original Civil War recruiting broadside for the 3rd Delaware Infantry, known as the “Lockwood Legion,” under the command of Colonel Samuel H. Jenkins. Printed in bold patriotic red and blue inks, this large poster calls for “Good Active Men” to enlist in the Union cause with a rousing header: “UNION FOREVER!” The striking woodcut illustration at center dramatically depicts a Union soldier standing over a fallen Confederate, grasping the U.S. flag as fellow troops charge behind him-an emotionally charged call to arms designed to stir enlistment.
This broadside was issued in 1861-62 during the early formation of the 3rd Delaware, which served with distinction in the Army of the Potomac and later under Sherman in the western campaigns.
The poster promises Good and Handsome UNIFORMS,” “APPROVED ARMS,” and immediate pay and rations-common recruitment incentives of the time.
A rare surviving example of Delaware Civil War recruiting ephemera, with strong association to the Fastern Shore’s Unionist efforts under Brigadier General Henry H. Lockwood. The regiment saw action at Antietam, Gettysburg, Resaca, and through the Carolinas Campaign.
Excellent overall with minor age toning, original folds, and archival edge support. Clear, vibrant typography with only modest foxing. Vivid red and blue inks remain striking. A powerful and highly displayable artifact of Delaware’s Civil War history and a fine piece of Union patriotic art.
