Oversized Charleston, South Carolina Slavery Document

Large document measuring 16” by 13”, a petition drafted by the law partnership of John Geddes and Edward Peter Croft on behalf of Joseph Seibert and his wife Mary, requesting the partition of an estate in Charleston, including a parcel of land which they claim had been leased before the death of the owner. They also lay claim to four slaves owned by the estate, named in the petition as Tom, Abram, Patty, and Doll. The petition is signed “Geddes & Croft” and is docketed on the verso. The document shows folds with extensive splitting and taped repairs on the verso, with additional small chips and light foxing, but otherwise displays very well. John Geddes would later serve as the forty seventh governor of South Carolina. This is one of the largest slavery related documents we have offered.
