Description
Pair of 18th Century Leather Shoes with Wooden Soles
A remarkable pair of original shoes from upstate New York near Saratoga Springs and dating to the 1700s. Each shoe is constructed with carved wooden soles and retains its original tooled leather uppers, decorated with simple line designs across the vamp. The pair reflects the sturdy utilitarian footwear of the colonial and early republic period, with low heels and pegged construction typical of 18th century craftsmanship. Surviving examples of everyday footwear from this era are uncommon, as most were heavily worn and discarded. These shoes display significant age and wear, with losses to the leather and portions of the uppers, a relic of early American domestic life. Condition: Fragile overall with cracks, flaking, and losses to leather uppers; wooden soles intact with expected wear.
