Pocket Surgical Instrument Kit
Circa 1800
A compact medical instrument kit with implements housed in a folding brown leather case with green fabric lining, protective flaps, and stitched retaining loops.
VA wonderful, very early poicket surgical kit. The instruments include a curved urinary catheter, identifiable by its tubular construction and opening near the tip; dressing or dissecting forceps, used to grasp tissue and dressings; and locking artery forceps, intended to grip blood vessels or serve as a needle holder during suturing. A surgical director or probe, used to explore tissue or guide a cutting instrument.
This is a classic example of a physician’s minor surgical kit. An appealing display piece illustrating the portable equipment carried by physicians and surgeons.
