Pre-War Martingale of General James Slingerland

James Slingerland was from Albany and served in the New York State militia from the 1820’s to the 1850’s.  He was commissioned a Lt. Colonel in 1836 and a Brigadier General in 1842.  Slingerland was in the 9th Division, 31st Brigade, SNY. The martingale is from Slingerland’s estate and is constructed of bridle leather with buff colored paint on the front trimmed with black. The black leather heart at the center in adorned with a militia style stamped brass shako eagle. All straps and buckles are intact with moderate crazing to the leather surfaces. A fine piece of pre-war military horse tack that would display well with an officer’s sword of the era.
