Description

Presidential Electoral Democratic ballot for George McClellan and George Pendleton – Inventory Number: POL 123 / Sold McClellan Electoral Ticket, 1864 NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC TICKET.  Presidential election of 1864 held on Tuesday, November 8, 1864 Mounted on archival board. 1864, the Democrats were divided into War Democrats and Peace Democrats. Consequently, they sought a strong candidate who could unify the party. They compromised and nominated pro-war General George B. McClellan for president and anti-war Representative George H. Pendleton for vice-president.  The electoral ticket illustrates that choice; McClellan and Pendleton, for the Office of the President and Vice President, respectively. Listed are the electors at large and the congressional electors. The Democratic Party nominated General George McClellan, whom Lincoln had removed from command. McClellan ran on an anti-Lincoln and anti-Emancipation Proclamation platform and left open the possibility of a negotiated peace with the South. As the election approached, Union triumphs on the battlefield helped propel Lincoln to victory. He declared the election results a mandate to press on for an unconditional victory and a constitutional amendment to end slavery. Inventory Number: POL 123 / Sold
