Description

Quinine Sulphate – Compressed Tablets Bottle

Clear glass apothecary bottle retaining its original cork closure and period label reading “Compressed Tablets Quinine Sulphate.” The form and typography are consistent with mid-19th century pharmaceutical packaging, with a hand-applied paper label indicating dosage instructions (“One or two as directed”) and space for grain measurement. The bottle exhibits light waviness and impurities in the glass typical of Civil War–era manufacture.

Quinine sulphate was one of the most critical medicinal compounds of the war, used extensively by Union and Confederate medical departments as both a treatment and preventative for malaria and other fevers that debilitated troops, particularly in southern campaigns. Issued in tablet form for ease of transport and dosage, it became a staple in field hospitals and surgeons’ kits, often regarded as indispensable as any surgical instrument.

A clean, displayable example with strong label presence and excellent period character—representative of the essential medical realities faced by Civil War soldiers.
