Rare CDV of the 33rd New Jersey Infantry Battlefield Flag

John Kuhl Collection

CDV depicting a U.S. regimental flag displayed on the battlefield, attributed to the 33rd New Jersey Infantry. The image shows the tattered national colors standing upright on a simple wooden support—an extremely scarce subject in wartime photography, far removed from the posed studio portraits more commonly encountered.

The reverse bears the imprint of Kennedy & Schenck, 298 Broad St., Newark, N.J., the well-known New Jersey photographers who produced images for soldiers and local units during the war. Period pencil notations (likely from the 20th-century collector) record its provenance: “Came with 33rd NJ images… purchased from John Kuhl. See his note. Sword on floor.” Kuhl, a respected New Jersey historian and collector, handled a significant body of material related to the state’s Civil War regiments, making this association especially meaningful.

The 33rd New Jersey served in the XX Corps under Sherman, fighting in the Atlanta Campaign and the March to the Sea. Surviving images tied to the regiment are notably scarce, and a battlefield flag view is rarer still.

A powerful artifact with both historical presence and excellent provenance, ideal for collectors of New Jersey regiments, battlefield photography, or Union flag material.

Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
