Description
Rare Civil War-Era Harmonica
An exceptionally rare Civil War-period harmonica retaining its original metal body and marked with period manufacturer’s stamps. Portable musical instruments were among the most cherished personal possessions carried by soldiers, providing entertainment, comfort, and a connection to home during long periods in camp. Harmonicas were particularly valued for their compact size and durability, making them ideal companions for men in the field.
While frequently referenced in soldiers’ letters, diaries, and wartime accounts, surviving harmonicas from the Civil War era are seldom encountered today. Their small size, hard use, and fragile reed construction resulted in heavy attrition, leaving comparatively few authentic examples available to collectors.
This example exhibits the honest wear and untouched patina expected of a mid-19th century instrument and remains a tangible reminder of the music that echoed through camps, transports, hospitals, and picket lines during the war years. In more than thirty-seven years of handling Civil War artifacts, this is only the fourth example we have had the opportunity to offer, underscoring the rarity of original wartime harmonicas on today’s market.
A remarkable and highly desirable relic of the soldier’s everyday experience, representing one of the most elusive categories of Civil War camp-life artifacts.
