Rare Wartime CDV of the Location Where General James B. McPherson Was Killed – Inventory Number: ALB 309 / SOLD This is the first such wartime example of this image that we have encountered, a popular spot to be photographed in the post war years. Major General James Birdseye McPherson (1828-1864). Civil War period CDV photograph and post war albumen. CDV depicts a smashed wagon and battlefield debris underneath a plaque nailed to a tree, that is marked with the General’s name and the date when he was killed, during the Atlanta Campaign. Ironically a year earlier General James Birdseye McPherson was denied a leave of absence by General Sherman to get married, because he was considered too important a commander to be gone even for a short time. The following is penned onthe back of the CDV: “Died while returning to his command with a single orderly from Sherman’s HQs” (Warner) “Generals in Blue,” P. 307 Place where McPherson was killed. “Near Atlanta Georgia – An Isolated Wood”     Comes housed in 12 x 16 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
