Description

Reverse Painted Silhouette of George Washington

Bird’s-Eye Maple Frame

Classic early 19th century American reverse glass painting depicting a right-facing bust profile of George Washington, rendered in gilt and black against a neutral oval ground. The portrait is surrounded by a painted eglomisé-style border with delicate gilt corner floral devices, all retained within a substantial and visually rich bird’s-eye maple frame exhibiting warm, honeyed patina and scattered age marks consistent with honest use.

The lower edge of the oval bears the identifying inscription “WASHINGTON,” executed in period hand. The composition reflects the enduring popularity of Washington iconography in the decades following his death, when such reverse paintings were produced for domestic display as patriotic decoration.

The frame is fitted with a simple, early brass loop hanger at top, original, period-applied, reinforcing its use as a wall-mounted parlor piece. Minor spotting and expected oxidation to the reverse-painted surface, with light wear to the frame, all consistent with age.

A handsome and authentic early American decorative object combining Federal-era taste with enduring national symbolism.
