Description

Sea Fencible Model 1816 Conversion Musket

A desirable Sea Fencibles conversion of the U.S. Model 1816 musket, altered to .69 caliber smoothbore percussion. The lock is clearly marked U.S. / E. WHITNEY, with the conversion carried out at New Haven in 1834, as noted on the tang. The barrel retains a pleasing, evenly aged patina with inspector markings present, including a “P” within an oval and “V” proofs. Steel components exhibit a smooth, untouched surface with honest wear throughout.

The musket is fitted with a distinctive large brass buttplate, characteristic of Sea Fencibles usage, stamped with the number 94. The stock remains solid, showing expected service wear, with minor wood loss near the buttplate and a visible inspector’s cartouche on the left side.

All primary components remain intact, including both sling swivels and the button-tipped ramrod. This example represents a well-preserved and attractive piece for the collector of naval or coastal defense arms, with Eli Whitney’s New Haven conversion adding further desirability.
