Description

Sea Fencibles Model 1842 Springfield Musket

Model 1842 Springfield musket issued to the Massachusetts Sea Fencibles. The lock is marked Springfield 1850 with eagle and U.S. markings.
The barrel bears VP and eagle head proof marks and the tang is dated 1858. The musket retains its large brass buttplate characteristic of Sea Fencibles issue.

The trumpet-tipped ramrod remains present though stuck in place. Both sling swivels remain intact. Sea Fencibles units served in coastal defense roles during the Civil War.

The Model 1842 occupies a key position in American military small-arms development. It was the first standard U.S. musket produced completely by machine methods with fully interchangeable parts, and it bridged the gap between the old smoothbore infantry arm and the later rifled musket that would dominate Civil War battlefields. Well-preserved examples remain especially desirable because they show the robust, utilitarian lines of the antebellum Federal musket just before the revolution in military rifled arms.
