A desirable example of the Sharps & Hankins Model 1859 Carbine in .52 caliber, a distinctive Civil War-era naval arm produced in Philadelphia.

 

The left side of the frame is crisply stamped SHARPS & HANKINS / PHILADA, remaining clear and legible. The frame also bears the Sharps patent date of 1859, with serial number 8306 stamped in two locations, including the tang of the breech mechanism.

 

The breech mechanism and internal slide are intact and functionally complete, with the rifling grooves in the barrel remaining sharp and clearly defined. Both front and rear sights are present, along with the sling swivel mounted to the underside of the buttstock.

 

Metal surfaces exhibit a pleasing, even dark patina with areas of light oxidation and honest age, consistent with service use. The stock is solid and attractive, showing a deep tone with scattered light wear and handling marks.

 

The brass buttplate retains a rich, deep yellow tone with light peppering, providing strong visual contrast to the darker steel components.
