Description

Silver Christian Commission Badge

Silver pin worn by an agent of the Christian Commission during the Civil War. Constructed of silver measuring 2.15 inches in width and .5 inches in height, this badge bears a well-executed jewelers’ inscription reading: “U.S. Christian Commission – Phila.” The reverse retains the original T-bar pin and open hasp.  A fine example! The organization, which was based in Philadelphia was founded in 1861 by the Young Men Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.) to distribute bibles and bandages to Union soldiers in the coming war. And, by the war’s end the commission had dispensed over a billion dollars worth of soldiers’ charity relief (reckoned in today’s finances.) It received glowing praise from virtually prominent Union politicians and soldier, beginning with Abraham Lincoln and U.S. Grant, and from prominent humanitarians such as Florence Nightingale.

Comes housed in 5 inch x 6 inch riker display case with blue velvet backing and descriptive card.
