Society of the Army of the Potomac Medal
A fine post–Civil War veterans’ badge issued to members of the Society of the Army of the Potomac, ca. 1870s–1890s. The medal is struck in gilt bronze in the form of a Maltese-style cross, each arm filled with rich red enamel, symbolizing the corps distinctions of the Army of the Potomac. Between the arms radiate gilt sunburst rays, enhancing the visual depth of the piece. At the center are four black enameled triangular panels, each bearing a device in gilt: a cross, a star, and two clover-like motifs, representing unity among the various corps and divisions that comprised the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. The badge measures approximately 2” across (standard size for this society), with original gilt finish and enamel intact, showing only minor wear consistent with age and handling. The reverse is plain, as issued, with a horizontal pin-back fitting (typical of veterans’ society insignia of this period).
The Society of the Army of the Potomac was founded in 1869 in New York City by former Union officers and enlisted men who had served in that army. It functioned as a fraternal organization, much like the GAR, but restricted its membership to veterans of the Army of the Potomac. Members wore this distinctive cross at reunions, parades, and official gatherings to signify their wartime service and continued bonds of comradeship.
Overall very good, with bright enamel and strong gilt highlights, only light wear from age. An attractive example of one of the most recognizable postwar veterans’ society medals.
