Description

Spanish Plug Bayonet – Inventory Number: BAY 291 / SOLD This is a fine example of a Spanish plug bayonet, likely dating from the late 17th to early 18th century. Plug bayonets were designed to be inserted directly into the muzzle of a musket, temporarily converting the firearm into a spear-like weapon before the adoption of socket bayonets. The blade is straight, double-edged, and tapers to a sharp point, exhibiting age toning and tool marks consistent with period forging. The turned wooden grip has a pleasing patina and is fitted with a simple iron crossguard, which offers basic hand protection. It comes housed in a period-style wooden scabbard with a leather throat and metal tip reinforcement. Spanish plug bayonets are far scarcer than their French or British counterparts and are prized for their early and utilitarian design. This piece is a solid representative of transitional weaponry at the dawn of modern infantry arms.   Inventory Number: BAY 291 / SOLD
