U.S. .69 Caliber Cartridge Box with Tins
C. 1850’s – Early Civil War
A very good example of a regulation U.S. .69 caliber infantry cartridge box complete with its original tinned-iron liners. The outer flap shows a factory-pierced slot for a cartridge box plate; however, there is no evidence that a plate was ever mounted—no impressions, stitch wear, or shadowing—indicating it was issued and carried without one. This is a desirable and less commonly encountered variant, as most surviving boxes exhibit clear plate wear.
The leather remains strong with good surface and color, showing honest field use but no structural losses. Inner implement pouch intact. Both cartridge tins are present and correctly fitted. Belt loops solid with no repairs. A clean, untouched example of early-war accoutrement suitable for any infantry equipment display.
