U.S. Model 1855/1861 Springfield Socket Bayonet with Seven-Rivet Scabbard and Frog
Marked “U.S.” with Sub-inspector Stamp; Leather Frog by E.A. Crossman & Co., Newark, New Jersey
A fine and complete example of the standard issue .58 caliber U.S. Springfield socket bayonet, accompanied by its original regulation scabbard and seven-rivet leather frog. The blade is crisply stamped “U.S.” on the ricasso with an additional sub-inspector’s letter beneath. Socket retains bright metal with smooth surface and functional locking ring. The black leather scabbard remains supple and complete with its brass tip intact. The frog is boldly impressed with dual oval cartouches reading E.A. Crossman & Co., Newark, N.J., a noted wartime contractor for accoutrements. All seven brass rivets are intact with expected verdigris from age. Stitching on the rear seam remains tight except for a 2-inch section at the throat showing minor separation, otherwise excellent.
A desirable Civil War period bayonet and scabbard combination exhibiting clear maker and inspector marks, with a strong overall presentation—an excellent representative example for any advanced Civil War arms or accoutrement collection.
