Description
U.S. Model 1860 Cavalry Saber by Mansfield & Lamb, 1865
Inspected “U.S. / C.E.W. / 1865” and maker marked “MANSFIELD & LAMB / FORESTDALE, R.I.”
Excellent Civil War-period U.S. Model 1860 Cavalry Saber produced by Mansfield & Lamb of Forestdale, Rhode Island—one of the principal wartime contractors supplying sabers to Federal forces. The ricasso is crisply stamped “U.S. / C.E.W. / 1865” opposite the well-struck maker’s oval. The regulation three-branch brass guard and pommel retain an attractive untouched patina with the grip showing original leather wrap and twisted brass wire intact. The underside of the pommel is boldly rack-numbered “B 45.” The blade exhibits a smooth, even steel surface with scattered light gray patina and no edge nicks or sharpening. Accompanied by its original steel scabbard showing three small solder repairs near the drag and along the midsection, likely period field maintenance.
A handsome and complete late-war example of the quintessential Union cavalry saber, exhibiting desirable 1865 date, clear inspection and maker marks, and a distinctive rack-numbered pommel indicative of unit issue.
