U.S. Model 1863 Contract Rifled Musket – S.N. & W.T.C., Massachusetts – Dated 1864 

 

Fine and complete example of a U.S. Model 1863 .58 caliber contract rifled musket, manufactured in 1864 by S.N. & W.T.C. for Massachusetts.  

 

The steel components retain much of their desirable armory-bright appearance, displaying an attractive silver-gray color with fine scattered speckling of darker patina. The lockplate is sharply marked with the Federal Eagle and “U.S.” and “S.N. & W.T.C. / FOR / MASSACHUSETTS” forward of the hammer. The rear of the lockplate is dated 1864.  

 

The left barrel flat at the breech is stamped “L.F.R.”, while the left angled breech flat bears the number “38,” an inspector’s Eagle Head, and “V P” viewed and proofed markings. The top of the barrel at the breech is stamped “I.C.” and dated 1864. The Eagle on the bolster shows wear but remains visible.  

 

This is the variation of the Model 1863 utilizing screw-tightened barrel bands without band springs. Each barrel band is stamped with the letter “U.” The sling swivels, rear sight, and ramrod all remain intact. 

 

Mechanically, the lock remains in full working order, with the hammer securely holding in both the half-cock and full-cock positions.  

 

The walnut stock remains solid and in nice condition, showing honest period wear with scattered minor dings and scratches. No inspector’s cartouches are presently visible. The left side of the buttstock is stamped with the initials “I.C.” and bears the number “40” painted in black along with a “4” painted in white. A small letter “S” is stamped on the rear flat of the trigger guard.  

 

Overall, a fine and complete example of a Civil War-era Model 1863 contract rifled musket, retaining strong markings and an appealing armory-bright appearance.
