Uncle Tom’s Cabin As It Is; or, Life at the South
1852 Anti–Uncle Tom’s Cabin Novel (British Edition)
Rare 1852 British publication of Uncle Tom’s Cabin As It Is; or, Life at the South, written by W. L. G. Smith as a direct response to Harriet Beecher Stowe’s highly influential Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852). Issued amid intense transatlantic debate over slavery, this work represents one of the earliest and most explicit examples of the so-called “Anti–Uncle Tom” literature that sought to rebut Stowe’s portrayal of Southern life and slavery.
Published in London by Henry Lea, Warwick Lane, this example is the first British edition, offered in its original paper wrappers. The cover retains its period printed illustration and pricing (“One Shilling”), with expected wear, toning, and edge losses consistent with age and use.
The text presents narratives, scenes, and incidents intended to portray slavery and plantation life from a pro-Southern perspective, making the volume an important—if controversial—primary source reflecting 19th-century attitudes and propaganda surrounding slavery in the years immediately preceding the American Civil War.
Also present is a period dedication page honoring Henry Clay, underscoring the book’s alignment with conservative Unionist and colonizationist viewpoints popular among certain political circles of the era.
An uncommon survival and a significant artifact of Civil War–era cultural history, illustrating how literature became a battleground in the struggle over public opinion on slavery.
