Description

Union Soldier with Burnside Carbine & Bowie Knife

A scarce and compelling 1/9 plate tintype depicting a Union private, likely of Rhode Island origin, armed with a 2nd Model Burnside carbine and a large Bowie knife tucked prominently in his belt—an evocative and seldom-seen combination of issued firearm and personal fighting blade. The soldier is posed in uniform holding the distinctive 2nd model Burnside, its characteristic profile discernible lack of forearm stock.  Despite the dark tone of the image.

Though the plate is notably dark, examination reveals the carbine and the unmistakable form of the knife at the waist.

Housed in a period case with an attractive gilt brass mat and intact velvet liner, the piece retains excellent overall presentation. The subdued contrast is typical of some period tintypes and does not detract from its rarity or importance as a wartime image featuring a carbine.
