US Regulation Artillery Gunner’s Haversack
Excellent condition, complete US regulation artillery gunner’s haversack. In contrast to the light, tarred canvas haversack carrying foodstuffs and mess gear, the artillery or gunner’s haversack was worn by the “Number 5” of the gun crew on a field gun who used it to carry the artillery round from the ammunition chest on the limber or caisson to the gun, where he then handed it to the “Number 2” for loading. Of course, these were complete, fixed rounds, so the haversack had to be robust, heavy-weight leather to bear the weight and the abrasion from the metal and also protect the propellant powder charge contained in a cloth bag attached to thee projectile from sparks or flaming debris from firing guns. Period photographs of artillerymen posed in position around their guns often show these.
Both bag and shoulder strap are made of heavy, light brown leather- the 1862 ordnance manual specifies “bag leather” – with the bag having a gusset for expansion and flap coming about halfway down the front and secured by a long fastening tab that is secured by a roller buckle with retaining loop sewn to the lower front. The shoulder sling is made in two pieces, sewn to the upper rear corners of the bag with three long lines of stitching each, and fastening together and adjusting with a wide roller buckle and retaining loop that would sit on the wearer’s chest.
This example bears a clear “U.S. Watervliet Arsenal” stamp on the leather, identifying it as government issue and linking it directly to one of the major U.S. arsenals that supplied arms and accoutrements during the 19th century.
The condition is excellent. The leather shows a nice, even, light brown color overall, It has not been treated with any preservatives or polish.
These are rather tough to find, since they were so useful for general purposes in civilian life after the war. This one would make a great addition to an artillery collection or display.
