Virgina Cross Shoulder Plate

 

This rolled brass, oval breast plate that was worn on cotton web shoulder straps. Very good, excavated condition, missing the “attachment devices” The plate has a fine smooth brown patina. There are no bends, dents, cracks, or repairs. Measures approximately 62 x 80 mm. Recovered at Cold Harbor. Referenced in the book “The Hammond Civil War Collection” by Mike O’Donnell & Howard Crouch, on page 273, and see, “the state (Virginia) acquired around 10,000 of these oval ornaments from the Richmond shop of Mitchell & Tyler and well-known New York military supplier, James S. Smith.” A very fine example of this style of cross belt plate.

 

Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
