Description

Washington City View CDV Featuring the U.S. Capitol and Emancipation Group

A desirable Civil War era carte de visite view of Washington, D.C., centered on the iconic United States Capitol dome as completed during the war years. The photograph captures the Capitol grounds in a transitional postwar moment, with the bronze Freedom statue crowning the dome clearly visible, placing the image firmly in the mid-1860s.

In the foreground stands the recently installed Emancipation Group (also referred to as the Freedman’s Memorial model studies), depicting a seated classical figure and allegorical elements tied to Union victory and emancipation themes. The surrounding iron fencing, sparse landscaping, and unpaved walkways reflect the still-developing Capitol grounds typical of the immediate postwar period.

The composition is particularly appealing, balancing the monumental architecture of the Capitol with the sculptural group below, offering a strong visual narrative of Union preservation and the evolving national identity in the wake of the Civil War. The lightly toned albumen image exhibits expected age toning and minor surface wear, consistent with examples produced circa 1865–1867.

An attractive and historically evocative Washington view, capturing the nation’s capital at the very close of the Civil War and the dawn of Reconstruction.
