A bold and visually impressive Civil War veterans’ broadside, announcing a community meeting for “Wheeler’s Battery” and urging townspeople to “Come Now and Help the Veterans!” The poster’s strong black lettering, ornate border design, and exclamatory style typify the urgency to fill the ranks of the decimated unit and additional fundraising.
Printed in large block and decorative type, this broadside would have been displayed prominently in public spaces to attract attendance and contributions to causes. “Wheeler’s Battery”, also known as the 13th New York Independent Battery under the command of Captain William Wheeler is best known for its service at the Battle of Gettysburg during Pickett’s Charge.
