An excellent and rare survival of a household product, this is an original Patent Polish box by Wm. F. Pratt of Peterboro, New Hampshire, retaining its original printed paper label.
The label advertises the polish for an impressively wide range of applications, including the cleaning and polishing of silver and plated ware, knives and forks, spoons, door knobs and plates, glassware, ornamental work, locomotives and fire engines, military equipments, harness and carriage trimmings, and other metal goods—offering a fascinating glimpse into both domestic life and industrial needs of the period.
Also printed are directions for use, instructing application with a damp cloth followed by polishing with a dry cloth, along with the original retail price listed as 12½ cents per box.
A wonderful artifact for collectors of Civil War–era household goods, apothecary items, early advertising, or New England manufacturing history, and a striking display piece that illustrates everyday life.
