1837-Dated Ames Model 1833 Dragoon Saber - Inventory Number: SWO 312

    Very Good Condition

An early and significant example of the Model 1833 Dragoon Saber, manufactured by the N. P. Ames Company of Springfield, Massachusetts, and dated 1837—making it one of the earliest American-made cavalry sabers produced under U.S. government contract.

This saber features the hallmark wide, curved single-edged blade measuring approximately 34½ inches in length, with a deeply etched “UNITED STATES” along the blade’s surface. The ricasso bears sharp and legible markings: “N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / 1837” on one side, with “ORD. DEPT / U.S.A.” stamped on the opposite.

The brass Phrygian helmet-style guard shows a rich, untouched patina and is structurally sound with no damage or distortion. The original leather-wrapped grip with twisted brass wire is well-preserved, showing only minor wear consistent with age. The blade exhibits scattered areas of light gray patina and minimal pitting, with no active corrosion.

Retains its original iron scabbard, showing honest field wear and a smooth, even finish, with both mounting rings present and the drag intact.

A fine and historically significant pre-Mexican War cavalry saber in very good condition, this 1837 Ames example represents one of the earliest martial edged weapons produced in quantity for the U.S. Army and is an essential addition to any advanced collection of early American military arms.
