1853 Pattern Cavalry Saber Great Example! - Inventory Number: SWO 273 / SOLD
Excellent example of an original English Pattern 1853 cavalry saber used in the Civil War. Saber is in very good overall condition and measures 35¼” long with a total length of 41½”. Blade is exceptionally good with bright finish throughout. A single unstopped fuller runs for 25¾” along the upper edge of the blade. Most British-made sabers produced for export to the Confederacy were completely unmarked and never bear British military stampings. This is such an example.
The large, flat, iron-mounted hilt features a wide, flat knucklebow with two branches for the counterguard and a quillon ending in a flat disc. Entire hilt exhibits a rich patina and exhibits grips of original checkered leather in phenomenal condition!
The original iron scabbard is in very good condition with a gray patina overall. Scabbard retains both ring mounts with pointed ends which are commonly considered to be on the Confederate utilized examples which were imported. Perhaps the neatest attribute of this example is the presence of an original belt hanger constructed of buff leather from a sword belt which is mounted with a pair of link strap buckles of likely southern origin. This saber and scabbard represent a fine specimen that was used in service during the American Civil War.
