1860 Dated Ames Model 1860 Cavalry Saber - Inventory Number: SWO 310
A fine and desirable early production example of the Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, manufactured by the legendary Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, and clearly dated 1860 on the ricasso—marking it as part of the initial contract deliveries to the U.S. government at the outbreak of the Civil War.
The saber features its classic curved blade measuring approximately 35 inches, with full, untouched surfaces and a lightly aged patina. Both the “Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass” and “1860 / U.S.” markings remain deeply struck and legible, accompanied by original inspector initials.
The brass guard retains a mellow golden patina, and the leather-wrapped grip with twisted brass wire remains tight and nearly complete—an increasingly scarce attribute on early war-dated sabers. Paired with its original steel scabbard, which is free of major dents and retains a smooth, aged finish with intact throat, ring mounts, and drag.
An important and highly collectible early-war Ames saber, ideal for any serious collection of Civil War cavalry arms.
