    1864 Albumen Photograph of Four Wounded Union Officers - Inventory Number:  ALB 253 / ON-HOLD

    Rare albumen print of four wounded Union officers. From left to right are Captain Joseph H. Holman of the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, who lost his right arm at the Battle of the Crater, Petersburg, Virginia; Captain Paul T. Jones of the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, wounded in the assault at Petersburg on June 16; Lieutenant John H. Whiteside of the 58th Pennsylvania Infantry, wounded at Petersburg on June 24, 1864; Lieutenant J. George Cartwright of the 133rd New York Infantry, whose records indicate that he was absent sick at a hospital in Annapolis, Maryland. He was likely wounded in the arm at the battle of Cedar Creek. The back of the image identifies the officers in period ink, and is signed “Officer’s Hospital, Annapolis MD, Dec. 7th, 1864. The image measures 8 ½” by 10 ½” and has some foxing and somewhat light contrast. Overall, a rare Civil War photograph with excellent content. 

    Joseph H. Holman -  24 years old. Enlisted on 8/11/1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant. On 8/11/1862 he was commissioned into “G” Co. PA 2nd Heavy Artillery. He was transferred out on 4/20/1864. On 4/20/1864 he was commissioned into “E” Co. PA 2nd Pro Heavy Artillery. He was transferred out on 8/26/1864. On 8/26/1864 he was commissioned into “G” Co. PA 112th Light Artillery. He was Mustered Out on 12/12/1865. He was listed as: Wounded 7/30/1864 Petersburg, VA (Severe wound in right forearm). Promotions: 1st Lieut., Capt. 4/20/1864, 1st Lieut. 1/25/1865.

    Paul T. Jones - Enlisted on ½/1862 as a Captain. On 01/02/1862 he was commissioned into “L” Co. PA 2nd Heavy Artillery. He was discharged for wounds on 11/29/1864. He was listed as: Wounded 6/16/1864 Petersburg, VA. Other Information: Died 6/29/1883 in Bridgeton, NJ.  

    John Whiteside - Residence Philadelphia PA;  Enlisted on 11/6/1861 as a Private. On 11/6/1861 he mustered into “C” Co. PA 58th Infantry. He was Mustered Out on 1/26/1865. He was listed as:  Wounded 1/24/1864 Petersburg, VA. Promotions: 2nd Lieut 5/5/1863,1st Lieut 5/31/1864. Capt 10/13/1864 (Not Mustered).

    J George Cartwright - 25 years old. Enlisted on 8/19/1862 at New York City, NY as a Sergeant. On 9/24/1862 he mustered into “C” Co. NY 133rd Infantry. He was discharged on 6/2/1865. Promotions: 1st Lieut 1/1/1864.
