Solid iron cannonball for use in the smoothbore Model 1841 6 lb. gun. Solid shot was employed against fortifications and was effective against massed infantry formations and troops in heavily forested areas. This example is uncleaned and is in as-found condition. The 6 pounder was completely outclassed by the 12 pounder Napoleon and was generally phased out by the middle of the Civil War. A classic early war cannonball.
