9th Corps Badge Bone and Horn Construction - Inventory Number: INS 404

Civil War Union Army IX Corps badge made with an ivory shield, and hand carved wooden crossed anchor and cannon. The reverse side is marked with the soldier’s initials "H.C.H.". Corps badges were used to distinguish units on the battlefield and help identify soldiers at a distance. The IX Corps badge features a shield with a fouled anchor and a cannon. The fouled anchor symbolizes the Corps' original organization as an amphibious assault force, and the cannon represents the artillery element of the corps. The badge design was adopted on April 10, 1864, according to General Burnside's General Orders. The corps was under the command of Major General Ambrose Burnside from its inception.

Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with black velvet and descriptive card.
