Alexander H. Stephens Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) – August 23, 1874 – Liberty Hall, Georgia - Inventory Number: CON 604

This is a remarkable two-page handwritten letter by Alexander H. Stephens, former Vice President of the Confederate States of America and later Governor of Georgia, dated August 23, 1874, from his residence at Liberty Hall in Crawfordville, Georgia. The letter is addressed to Mr. Thomas G. MacFarland of Walker County, Georgia, and includes its original hand-addressed envelope bearing a clear Crawfordville, Ga. postal stamp.

In this eloquent and reflective letter, Stephens discusses political sentiments surrounding Georgia’s representation in the post-Reconstruction period, referencing several potential candidates and offering measured political counsel. He writes of Col. L. D. Waddell of Augusta with admiration, describing him as “a gallant soldier… a gentleman in the truest sense,” and shares thoughts on candidate qualifications, regional unity, and honorable political deliberation.

Stephens also references the memory of “the noble dead” and writes in a spirit of patriotism, urging unity in representation for the state. His tone is deeply personal and philosophical, combining his political insight with a clear desire for thoughtful and ethical governance.

The letter is signed “Yours truly, Alexander H. Stephens.”

The letter is well-preserved with legible ink throughout and natural folds from mailing. The envelope is toned with wear consistent with age and handling but retains clear handwriting and stamp detail. An outstanding piece of Reconstruction-era political correspondence from one of the most prominent figures of the Confederacy.

Comes housed in 12 x 16 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
