Ames Model 1833 Enlisted Militia Dragoon Saber, Massachusetts Pattern - Inventory Number:  SWO 244 / SOLD

Model 1833 Dragoon saber manufactured in 1835 by Ames Manufacturing Company and purchased by the State of Massachusetts for militia use. The ricasso is dry needle scribed “N. P. AMES / CUTLER / SPRINGFIELD / 1835.” The blade is gray with moderate, even pitting, with the dry needle inscription “UNITED STATES DRAGOONS” faintly visible. The brass guard is marked “MS” for Massachusetts on the quillon, and has a mellow, uncleaned patina with a slight bend on the inner branch. The leather grip remains in good condition with some light wear, and is missing the wire wrap. The scabbard is a steel 1833 Dragoon pattern but incorrect for the Massachusetts contract scabbards which were brass, and has been highly polished. Overall a nice example of a scarce Massachusetts marked Dragoon saber that could have easily seen Civil War service.
