Ames Model 1860 Cavalry Saber, Dated 1861 - Inventory Number: SWO 229 / SOLD
Model 1860 cavalry saber made by Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee Massachusetts, one of 10,000 produced in 1861. The ricasso is marked on one side with the Ames maker’s mark and scroll, and “US / A.D.K. / 1861” on the opposite. The blade has somewhat darkened with age and has scattered light pitting overall, with a well done field sharpening. The brass guard has a deep, smooth, uncleaned brass patina and bend to the outer branch. The leather wrap is in good condition with a few areas of wear down to the wood and is complete with the twisted brass wire wrap. The original leather washer is intact around the ricasso. The scabbard is in good condition with a deep, plum patina and heavy wear to the drag from service. Overall, a very good example with a desirable early-war date.
