Austrian Lorenz Bayonet Scabbard – Inventory Number: BAY 289

Original leather scabbard designed for the Austrian Model 1854 Lorenz socket bayonet, one of the most widely imported European arms used during the American Civil War. Crafted of black bridle leather with a brass finial and reinforced seam stitching, this scabbard features a distinctive belt frog attachment with axe-head profile—a common feature on Lorenz accoutrements.

The Lorenz rifle-musket and its accompanying bayonet saw heavy use by both Union and Confederate troops, with the South relying heavily on imported arms. This scabbard is a textbook example of those imported alongside the Lorenz rifles, particularly those routed through the blockade for Confederate use.

Showing age-appropriate wear, intact stitching, and a pleasing surface patina, this piece is an excellent representation of foreign military material adapted for American service. A fine addition for collectors of Civil War edged weapons and imported arms gear.
