Belgian Double Barrel Boot Pistol - Inventory Number: HAN 177 / SOLD

Mid-19th century Belgian double-barrel boot pistol with a Liege “ELG” proof mark on the lock. The frame is brass and exhibits finely engraved scroll work. Both screw off barrels are brass and smoothbore, with false rifling cut into the first half inch of the muzzles. The trigger guard is iron with an engraved star motif. The left hammer holds on half cock, and the right hammer functions on both positions. The checkered wooden grip has some subtle old repairs. Overall length of the pistol is 7 ½”. These pistols were relatively inexpensive and popular sidearms for Civil War soldiers. Similar examples can be seen on page 96 of Civil War Artifacts: A Guide for the Historian by Howard R. Crouch. An attractive example.
