Cavalry Officer's Insignia - Inventory Number: INS 217 / Sold
This stamped brass device is an excellent example of a Civil War Cavalry officer's hat insignia. Device features two long sabers crossed below their center points. This specimen has scabbard rings touching the quillion of the knuckle guard. Made to mimic the regulation insignia that was constructed of embroidered bullion thread, these stamped brass variants were much sturdier in the field. This specimen is in very good condition. The one-piece insignia measures about 2 inches wide and is 1 1/4 inches high. This piece retains nearly all of its original gold guilt finish, untarnished. There are no bends or dents. Piece retains all of the four orginal, small brass wires soldered to the body. Reference Campbell & O'Donnell's "Headgear Insignia."
